Female prison rape refers to any form of sexual assault or rape committed against incarcerated women by other inmates or staff members within correctional facilities such as prisons and detention centers. This is a widespread yet underreported issue that disproportionately affects marginalized populations, particularly those who identify as LGBTQ+, transgender, Black, Indigenous, or of color. Studies have shown that up to 70% of cisgender women and as high as 80% of transgender and gender nonconforming individuals will experience some form of unwanted sexual contact during their time in custody. Factors contributing to this alarming prevalence include overcrowding, lack of effective oversight and accountability mechanisms, institutionalized heterosexism and misogyny, and systemic discrimination based on race, class, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
