Sadomasochism refers to a sexual behavior or orientation characterized by the mutual exchange of power and control through the giving or receiving of pleasure from acts involving the receipt or infliction of pain or humiliation. This can take various forms such as bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, and sadism or masochism. The term is derived from the combination of the French words 'sade' which refers to the Marquis de Sade, a writer famous for his erotic writings involving sadistic sexual practices, and 'masochisme' named after Austrian physician, Sigmund Freud's contemporary, Leopold von Sadie who wrote about his own masochistic desires. Sadomasochistic activities are consensual, meaning both parties agree to engage in them voluntarily.
