A sadomasochistic practice refers to any activity that involves inflicting pain or humiliation on oneself or others, usually within consensual sexual contexts. This can take various forms such as bondage, flogging, whipping, nipple pinching, and other forms of physical or emotional torment. The term draws its name from the combination of two terms: sadism, which derives from the Marquis de Sade's works promoting sexual gratification through infliction of pain or humiliation; and masochism, named after the Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch who popularized the concept of gaining pleasure from being submissive or suffering. Despite historical associations with taboo and perversion, sadomasochistic practices have gained acceptance in modern times as a legitimate form of sexual expression, provided that all parties involved are consenting adults.
