A safeword is a predetermined phrase or action agreed upon by all participants involved in an activity where consent can change suddenly and unpredictably, such as Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, and Masochism (BDSM) or any other type of consensual kink or sexual play. It serves as a signal that immediate attention and/or immediate cessation of the activity is needed due to discomfort, pain, fear, or loss of consent. Safewords are designed to override any previously established rules or agreements in order to prioritize the wellbeing and safety of the person who uses them.
