In BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism) relationships or play, the Top (short for 'dominant') is the partner who assumes control over the activities and acts as the one who dominates, while the Bottom (short for 'submissive') is the partner who submits and usually takes on the passive role. The Top may use various forms of physical or psychological power to exert their authority over the Bottom, such as through the use of restraints, spanking, bondage, whipping, verbal humiliation, and other forms of discipline. Both roles require mutual consent and communication between partners to ensure safety and enjoyment. The terms 'dom' and 'dominant' are also commonly used aliases for the Top.
